Naturally, all performance improvement claims for compilers have to
be taken with a grain of salt, or aspirin - the performance improvements
run to 1.5X or 2X in a few cases, with more modest improvements in more
cases, while many integer and i/o-bound programs,
for which all the compiler optimization which
is going to be helpful has already been done, will show +- a few %.

II. Announcement Details
On April 18, 1990 the new family of products called SPARCompilers was
announced. SPARCompiler products significantly improve the run-time
performance of Sun's SPARC processor-based family of workstations and
servers. SPARCompilers, complete with a rich set of programming tools,
are available not just for SPARCsystems, but also for Sun-3 and
Sun-386i systems.
What was announced?
- SPARCompiler Family of Products - enhanced compilers and tools
- Increased performance -- up to 15% for FORTRAN and 5% for
other languages
- Unbundled Sun C compiler
- Sun Source Browser and enhanced dbx/dbxtool
- New pricing for SPARCompiler products
Sun's investment in compiler and tools technology has paid off with
high quality and robust products that provide the best UNIX software
development environment. The improved performance results from the use
of the latest in code generation and optimization technology.
SPARCompiler products fully support Sun's commitment to standards and
provide the environment for increases in personal productivity with the
latest in programming tools. For the growing number of Sun's software
development customers the broad line of feature-enhanced SPARCompiler products
includes: Sun FORTRAN 1.3, C 1.0, Pascal 2.0, Modula-2 2.2, and C++ 2.0.
As a part of the SPARCompilers announcement Sun is introducing a new
enhanced C compiler now available unbundled from SunOS. C will
continue to be bundled with SunOS 4.1. By unbundling the C compiler we
will be able to get to market quickly with the latest compiler and
tools technology. Sun C 1.0 will be the basis for all future C compiler
improvements and enhancements.
A new SPARCompiler programming tool is now available - the Sun
SourceBrowser - a powerful window-based search tool for identifiers,
strings, and regular expressions. The SourceBrowser is currently
available for Sun C 1.0 and FORTRAN 1.3.
SPARCompilers prices have been set to reflect their value-added in
quality, robustness, performance, and ease-of-use. Pricing for Fortran
1.3 and Sun C 1.0 is $2000/A quantity 1. Pascal 2.0 and C++ 2.0 prices
have been increased to $2000/A quantity 1. Modula-2 pricing remains at
$2200/A quantity 1.

III. Sales Material and Customer Collateral

Aside from the product briefs and white papers in the SET Sales Guide,
that can be photocopied for customers, your literature center will be
receiving the SPARCompiler Optimization Technology white paper. This
paper explains to technical users the architecture and optimization
techniques used in SPARCompilers, as well as specific information on
how SPARCompilers take advantage of the SPARC architecture.
Sales offices will be receiving FCS copies of tapes and documentation
over the next few weeks, through standard distribution channels.

IV. General Release Notes
1. All SPARCompiler products are available NOW!
2. SPARCompilers require SunOS 4.X.
3. Quantity 1 prices include 1 RTU license, media, and documentation.
4. An RTU license is required per user per workstation.
5. C++ is currently available only for Sun-3's, SPARCstations,
and SPARCservers.
6. Corporate Site (multi-RTUs) licenses are non-discountable.
