Hello you all,
As it is to be expected, more and more revelations are surfacing about the Cathedral's electricians who, now, had admitting stealing the Codex and many other items from the Cathedral's archives.
It had been reported that the culprit is a very devout person who rarely, if ever, missed Mass. As it turns out, it appears that he was stealing from the collections on a regular basis. For a few years now the Canonio (Cathedral care-taker priest) in charge of the collections had complained that they had become significantly smaller, which phenomenon was attributed to the (financial) "crisis" besieging Spain. There were several tell-tale signs that something was amiss, principally the fact that what had significantly decreased were those collections in foreign currencies, like dollars, or pounds. In marked contrast with previous experiences, they rarely exceeded one dollar, or pound.
It also turns out that when the Cathedral improved its lighting system four years ago the electrician lost his job. He now claims that he was owed nearly 50,000 Euros and that is why he stole the Codex, to "pay himself".
Oh well,
He has been charged with trespass, theft, invasion of privacy (for taking the priests correspondence), and sundry other charges. Since the maximum penalty in Spain for stealing art objects, regardless of character or value, is only three years, presumably the additional charges will lengthen the possible incarceration punishment if the fellow is convicted.
There is a saying in Spain: "No hay mal que por bien no viene" (every cloud has a silver lining, sort-of). The Codex will be returned to the Cathedral by the authorities next Sunday, and plans are being made to put it in a shatter-proof glass case, under stricter security conditions, and put it on exhibition for all of us to see.
Hopefully, something will be done about protecting the collections from theft. As mentioned before, the electrician not only had purchased two condominiums for cash in the last few years, but had accumulated One million Two Hundred Thousand Euros in cash which the police found in his properties.
Below is a picture of the garage wherein the Codex was found (the arrow points to the precise place). Let me know if it doesn't go through and I'll send it separately to those of you who may want to see it.
Hugs!
Rosina
