Hello you all,
I agree..... the picture is astonishing. The truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction.
The electrician, his wife and son are being detained in prison without bail. The wife is charged with "invasion of privacy" and "money laundering" and the son with "money laundering". This charge would appear to indicate that there's more to the goings on that meets the eye.
In addition to the several art objects (silver trays, etc.) the police found two bags containing keys to almost every part of the Cathedral, some of them in duplicate. The Codex was kept in a safe in a chamber reached through the archives. It was resting on a small pillow and covered with an embroidered scarf, and now it turns out that the keys to the safe were often left on the safe's door!
While there are four security cameras spanning the archives none reached the area where the safe is located.
The police calculate that the electrician was stealing about 250 Euros per day from the collection centers, and that he may have done so for twenty two years. They feel that during the last Holy Year he may have taken as much as 250,000 Euros; since except for the purchase of condominiums for cash the electrician appears to have led a modest life, this may account for the million two hundred Euros found in his properties. But, if, so, why the "money laundering" charges? It is a puzzlement.
Meanwhile, the authorities have decided to hold on to the Codex instead of returning it to the Cathedral tomorrow, and, frankly, I don't blame them.
There seems to be a chorus of protest in Galicia about the astonishing lack of security in the Cathedra,l with some protesters demanding that the Codex be taken to a national Museum for its safety.
Ho well!
Rosina
