[Gocamino] Camino Mozarabe Cell phone reception?

Love your post Rebekah!

Security and certainty...the antithesis of pilgrimage in my opinion. It
really is about putting aside so many of the rules and roles of personal
life and just following the arrows, moving forward, accepting the events
and adventures of the day. It is an opportunity to simply be, to
commune and to trust. But, to each his/her own.

Life is good.

That Movistar map isn´t worth the pixels it´s written with. The other phone companies have similar coverage maps, and they are a far cry from reality, too. They are meant to lend certainty to people who insist on certainty, but they are dealing in strange sound waves and other magical science things that defy map-makers and PR graphics departments.
And people who insist on certainty.

Spain is a strange and mystical place. It laughs in the face of anyone who wants any certainty about anything. Even the phone company... and Spanish phones may be one of the most mystical things in the whole Iberian world.

Actually Movistar Espana does publish coverage information.

http://www.servicios.movistar.es/web/movistar/cobertura

You will need to select a province and city, but once you do that, you will see a map, and you can zoom or use the arrows to move around. Unfortunately, they don't let you zoom out far enough to cover a large area, but you can see the details on your planned route.

Of course, real world coverage is not the same as the published data, as it depends on many factors, including the building, etc. Generally, coverage will be better at the top of the hill than the bottom of a valley, as cell phone frequencies are more or less line of sight.

I would anticipate reasonable coverage along highways and train tracks connecting Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla. Once you head north of Sevilla, I would expect coverage to range from just adequate to very poor in some locations. Sorry there's not better news. Mobile phone carriers here in the US publish grandiose and hopeful coverage maps, but not everyone on foreign shores wants to make a similar statement. Spain is very mountainous, and solid mobile coverage is a difficult thing to pull off. I don't blame them for playing it close to the chest.
