Hello you all,
Those of you who have been able to see the "Translatio" attachments that I sent, (or tried to), will have noticed that the scanned ceramic, cobalt blue and white, shows Santiago on the boat and the boat tied up to a small pillar; and Theodore and Atanasio are praying behind the boat with Santiago shells above them on the sides of a cross that culminates in a star. The etched "ceramic" was made by the famed Sargadelos artisans of Galicia. (It is not really a ceramic; it is a group of figures superimposed on a polished cobalt-blue stone).
It is recounted that after the boat carrying Saint James' remains from Palestine reached the Galician coast it continued inland through the river until it reached Iris Flavia, (today's Padron, sort-of) where it was tied up to a pillar; somehow the small pillar survived the centuries and centuries and it is maintained TODAY underneath the altar in the Padron church. Pilgrims going to Fisterra or Muxia often stop at the church to see the pillar, and many of them leave small tokens, like family pictures, medals, a lock of hair, coins and petitions atop the pillar.
The use of the shell as a Santiago symbol is also believed to have its genesis at that time. It is said that a knight was riding his horse at a gallop along the Galician coast when the horse spotted the boat carrying the body of Saint James and dove into the sea, with the knight on his back, towards the boat. When horse and knight emerged from the waters they were covered in shells....... hence the symbol.
Some years ago a friend gave me a set of absolutely beautiful ink drawings depicting various events on the Camino, including the Translatio and the knight and horse surfacing covered in shells. Since this theme has sparked so much interest, I will look for the set of the drawings and after scanning them I'll send them to anyone who wishes to, and can, can upload them where everyone who wants to do so may see them.
Meanwhile, again
Best wishes for a wonderful New Year.
Hugs!
Rosina
