[Gocamino] Costume vs. disfraz

Another of the very many words that cause confusion when attempting to translate their phonetic etymology from a romance language into English is simpatia/ sympathy. In Spanish "Simpatia" means charm,  likeableness, friendliness, etc. and is the root of the better understood "simpatico", whereas in English "sympathy" is used as compassion., pity, commiseration.
The roots of the word are "sym"  (with) and "pathos" (emotion), so that while essentially faithful to their common source their interpretation seems to be owing to different cultural temperaments.
Yet, the one word that keeps its substance when translated into any language is "Camino" : the way and, the direction. The one distinctive application in the romance languages is that camino (with a small "c") also means "I walk".

Subject: [Gocamino] Costume vs. disfraz

Actually, in English the word "costume" is
orrect for this usage. Costume refers to both
he disfraz that you might wear to a costume
arty or in a play, as well as various native
ostumes. So if a person wears blue jeans and
t-shirt most of the time, but on special
ccasion dresses like someone might have dressed
00 years ago, we would say that they are in
heir "native costume." We might also refer to
t as "traditional costume" or perhaps
traditional clothing", "native dress", "national

ostume", or "regional costume".

It is always a problem to assume that you can
dequately translate a single word in one
anguage with one word in another language, there
s almost always a subtle difference in meaning,
r in this case a difference in correct usage.
So how would you say "traditional clothing" in
panish? Would it matter if the person wore the
raditional clothing every day, or only on
pecial occasions?
Richard

>Please don't refer to our traditional suits as
costumes. In Spanish sounds as disfraz, which
is not. I am sure there is a better word in
English than costume!!
