Hi John,
Your picture of Mari does not do any justice to her looks. While she is not avid to be photographed I was able to get a good photo once. Shall I send it for your article?
Also, your writing about Susana does not mention that she is a qualified psychologist and teacher.
One of the nicest outcomes of my Caminos has been to be honored by their personal friendship.... and one of my happiest times was their recent visit to New York City.
Mari's affection for the German language, and for Germany and Austria, motivated my first visit to Vienna which has developed into a love affair with that beautiful city. Mari is much appreciated by the Confraternity there which has mushroomed in recent years as has, over all, the enthusiasm for the Jakobsweg (Camino). A beautiful book about it (one of many) has been published recently. It is called "Im Zeichen der Muschel", and its cover has an indentation that holds inside it a bronze shell. The pictures in it are magnificent. (ISBN 3-7666-0667-0)
Hugs!
Rosina

ubject: [saintjames] A wedding!
ello you all,
Pilgrims, who have received a Compostela, or a Certificate, might remember Mari,
he manager of the pilgrims’ office. It is fairly impossible to forget her if
ne has met her. Not only is she physically beautiful, she is unfailingly
harming and she speaks, absolutely flawlessly, English, French and German,
esides Galician and Castilian, of course.
During the years that she spent in universities in England, France and Germany
ursuing her study of languages she was showered with professional career offers
hat would have signified dream jobs to most of us. Yet, she turned them down to
eturn to Santiago and put her talents and abilities at the service of the
amino and its pilgrims. Her persistence and delightful personality have helped
ring about a great many changes and improvements, by melting the dourness and
onservatism of many Xunta and Archdiocese powers that be, such as the on-going
enovations of the Casa del Dean, (the building wherein the Pilgrims’ office is
ocated), the enlargement of the Belvis albergue, etc. etc. etc. For more than a
ecade her efforts on behalf of the Camino and its pilgrims have been tireless.
hile the Pilgrims’ office is supposed to close at nine p.m., it has not been
nusual to find Mari hard at work there until midnight or such.
Because of her impressive efforts and successes Mari has bee
n named “Hermana
ayor” (a title of distinction) by the Archconfraternity and has been honored
y20confraternities all over Europe and IberoAmerica.
....Well, Mari has decided to marry a fellow Galician. The wedding will take
lace next May 30th at 1:00 p.m. at the Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor y Real
e Sar, in Santiago, and it is sure to be a memorable affair attended by half
he Archdiocese people, including the choir, and everyone from the pilgrims'
ffice..
The subsequent reception in Cacheiras will be a traditional Galician celebration
ith bag-pipes, tambourines, etc., and many of those attending, I'm sure, will
e wearing Galician costumes
If some of you are in Santiago on the day, you may want to attend the wedding
eremony which in Galicia is sure to be quite distinct, colorful and full of
dmirable music.
Otherwise, those of you who have made Mari’s acquaintance (John? Peter? Chris?
ark?) May want to e-mail your good wishes.
It has been said that physical beauty and happiness are principally the result
f the inner goodness of the possessor. Certainly Mari is living proof of that.
nowing her one is hard put to decide which is the greatest: her beauty, her
harm, her cheerfulness or her undeniable goodness.
While she is equivocal about it, I should think that the ticking of the
iological clock has much to do with her decision to marry at this time (she is
n her early thirties), so I doubt whether she’ll have much time to devote
to
amino and pilgrims later on.
Meanwhile, you’ll be happy to know, she has arranged for the pamphlets
hat provide sundry types of information to pilgrims to be translated into
arious languages and made available to all pilgrims
In “Pride and Prejudice” Jane Austen has Lizzie tell her sister Jane: “Until I
ave your goodness I can never have your happiness”. If this be so, then Mari’s
wn happiness is ever assured.
.
Hugs!
Rosina
