Have spent quite a bit of time in Navarra (camino francés 2001 from SJPP and
several visits back since)- although I don't know offhand of any particular
trails...there are sooooo many wonderful areas to explore...to name a few of
the many I've enjoyed:
- Benedictine Monastery of Leyre - it houses the remains of the Kings of
Navarra and the lower grotto level (early Romanesque) still bears char marks
from the fires built by early pilgrims to keep warm when they sought refuge
in the original church..much to see there.
- Near Pamplona there's a mountain(hill really)topped by the church of San
Miguel...an annual pilgrimage associated with this - very special to the
locals.
- Bosque de Irati (forest of Irati) is nothing short of magical. In the fall
everyone goes berry hunting for the little berries used to make homemade
Patxarán...a potent elixir that has surely eased much pain for pilgrims over
the years - can't recall at the moment when the peak season is for
mushrooms, maybe after the spring rains...when the locals forage for "Setas"
with which to make all sorts of delicacies to tempt the palate. (caution:
must mushroom hunt with a local who knows which ones are safe!)
- Cuevas de Zugarramurdi (caves) is open to tourists (small
admission)interesting, beautiful and has some hiking trails as part of the
park
- Castillo Xavier (Javier)... is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier (patron
saint of Navarra) I love the huge stone angels that flank the entrance..you
have to look up to see them!
- Camino Aragonés which begins at Somport/Jaca is a beautiful route with
many points of interest before it meets up with the Camino Francés in Puente
La Reina..and would encourage you to visit Eunate if you haven't been there
yet. "Iglesia de Santa Maria de Eunate" translates to the Church of St.
Mary of the Hundred Doors....

Best advice? Get a good Northern Spain travel guide - there are several
good ones and some that have walking routes through the Pyrenees. Pamplona
might a good place to start...between folks at the Albergues and the
University of Navarra am sure you could find some kind souls who would enjoy
the chance to offer advice and recommendations to someone genuinely
interested in their culture and beautiful province.
Buena Suerte!

Hi all,

A book you may finding interesting and which I'm enjoying immensely!

The Basque history of the world
Kurlansky, Mark.
London : Jonathan Cape, 1999.
This book is part culture, history, travelogue and even has some
recipes.

If and when I have the privilege to do another Camino.....I'd like to
spend more time in the Basquelands, learn some of the language and just
wander around....and absorb the culture of the people and see more of
the countryside....

Has anyone done this? Does anyone have some knowledge of any walking
trails in the Basquelands?

Thanks and..

Best wishes to all,

Wendy

can hear her breathing."
