Here’s a summary of Santiago news that may be of interest:

 

-A group of cardiovascular patients started out from the Gregorio Maranhos hospital in Madrid on their way top Santiago.  They have reached Sarria where tonight they will hear the eminent cardiologist, Manuel Abreytua, speak about the beneficial effects of walking to rehabilitate cardio vascular weaknesses, smoking addictions and erectil dysfunctions (?). The group will rerassume walking and expect to reach Santiago in 4. The group will resume walking tomorrow and expect to reach Santiago in 4 days.

 

Hospiteros of the Portuguese Camino (about 150) will hold their sixth meeting in Pontevedra.  Flora Garcia, the secretary of the Association of Friends of the Portuguese Camino, reported that the themes to be discussed will be the easing of the overcrowding of the albergues, (so far, this year, more than 4,300 pilgrims have stayed at the O Gorgullon albergues) the availability therein of the types of food that pilgrims prefer, and first-aid supplies for pilgrims with foot and leg problems. At the conclusion of the reunion the hospitaleros themselves will walk some miles in symbolic pilgrimage.

 

Because the seventh of September is the day in which the birth of the Virgin Mary is symbollicaly celebrated, several “romerias” (pilgrimages) have been under way for the past few days to the churches of Ourense. Hundreds and hundreds of “romeros” from Santiago and its environs, including a large number of  Santiago pilgrims have converged in Ourense for the popular nocturnal “torch processions” to the Ponte Vella chapel and the “Os Milagros” church.

 

           Yesterday four women and one man sentenced to several years imprisonment at the penitentiary in Teixeiro commenced a pilgrimage to Santiago through the Northern Way  accompanied by two prison guards and two social workers.  They expect to reach Santiago in six days and will return  by bus/  The authorities overseeing such prison-release programs report that the recidivism among those convicts who have been in therm is almost nil.
