[Gocamino] How safe will I be on the Camino?

One recurring theme is “How safe will I be on the Camino?”

Pretty safe, as violent crime is very low in Spain. But, every now and then, 
a mini-crime wave emerges. The perps are invariably brought to swift justice 
as in the account which follows. This is gleaned from the Voz de Galicia, 
October 16, 2007. The original Spanish is followed my fractured English 
equivalent for your edification.

La Guardia Civil detiene a tres ladrones que asaltaban a peregrinos que 
recorrían el Camino Portugués

The Guardia Civil has detained thieves which assaulted pilgrims traveling to 
Santiago

Los ladrones ni respetan lo sagrado. Numerosos peregrinos que recorrían el 
Camino Portugués se convirtieron recientemente en el objetivo de un trío de 
delincuentes que los atracaron a punta de pistola, pero de fogueo. En total, 
fueron cinco golpes contra al menos una decena de personas que viajaban a 
pie hacia la catedral de Santiago. Dos de los asaltos se produjeron en los 
municipios de Barro y Caldas de Reis, en Pontevedra, y los otros tres en 
varios lugares de la provincia de A Coruña.

Thieves don’t respect the sacred. Numerous pilgrims which traveled the 
Camino Portuguese recently became the objective of a trio of delinquents who 
held them at gunpoint, but the gun was loaded with blanks. Altogether, they 
were five hits against at least ten people who traveled on foot towards the 
cathedral of Santiago. Two of the assaults took place in the municipalities 
of Barro and Calda de Reis in Pontevedra, and the other three in several 
places of the province of A Coruña.

La detención de los sospechosos, dos de ellos hermanos, se realizó a raíz de 
las denuncias interpuestas por varios de los caminantes en el puesto de la 
Guardia Civil de Caldas de Reis. Los robos se cometieron entre el 28 de 
septiembre y el 13 de octubre. «Los asaltaban y los amenazaban con una 
pistola de fogueo y barras de hierro», detallaron fuentes del instituto 
armado. «Disparaban un tiro al aire y les exigían todo lo que llevaban 
encima», añadieron. Los ladrones lograron un botín de poco más de 60 euros 
en metálico, gafas de sol y varias cámaras fotográficas y de vídeo.

The suspects were detained, two of them brothers, as a result of the 
accusations filed by several of the travelers to the officers of the Civil 
Guard of Calda de Reis. The robberies committed between the 28 of September 
and the 13 of October. "They assaulted them and they threatened them a blank 
(starter) pistol and iron bars", according to sources at the Guardia Civil. 
"They shot a shot to the air and they demanded everything hey had of value", 
they added. The thieves’ booty was a little more than 60 euros in cash, 
sunglasses and several photographic and video cameras.

Los agentes encargados de la investigación detuvieron a J.?A.?A.?B., vecino 
de Cuntis de 22 años, como el supuesto responsable de la oleada de atracos. 
El sospechoso viajaba en su automóvil, y tras un registro, se decomisó el 
arma de fogueo que se había utilizado en los atracos. Después de prestar 
declaración, J.?A.?A.?B. dijo que había intervenido en alguno de los 
episodios delictivos, con la colaboración de dos cómplices. «Dijo que no iba 
solo», precisaron las fuentes de la Guardia Civil.

The agents in charge of the investigation detained J.?A.?A.?B., residents of 
Cuntis for 22 years, allegedly responsible for the wave of holdups. The 
suspect traveled in his automobile, and according to the record, and the 
starter pistol that had been used in the holdups was stolen. After giving 
their statement, J.?A.?A.?B. said that they had taken part in some of the 
criminal episodes, with the collaboration of two accomplices. "They said 
they did not go alone", specified the sources the Guardia Civil.

Los agentes identificaron a dos hermanos de A Estrada como presuntos 
cómplices del imputado. J.?M.?S.?C. y M.?A.?S.?C., de 23 y 24 años, también 
fueron detenidos, aunque a uno de los hermanos solo se le acusó de cargos 
por robo en dos de los sucesos ocurridos en la provincia de A Coruña. 
J.?A.?A.?B. y J.?M.?S.?C. se enfrentan a cargos por delitos de robo en 
relación con los cinco atracos a peregrinos.

The agents identified two brothers of A Estrada as presumed accomplices of 
the accused. J.?M.?S.?C. and M.?A.?S.?C., 23 and 24 years old, who have also 
have been detained, although one of the brothers is charged with robberies 
in two of the events that happened in the province of A Coruña. J.?A.?A.?B. 
and J.?M.?S.?C. face robbery charges in relation to the five holdups of 
pilgrims.
