Your response is a very good supplement to the recent questions and
subsequent posts.

>From what I have read over the past few posts indicate that the tyro
pilgrims have already consulted their physicians and are planning 4 to 6
months in advance.

Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] [Gocamino] Health and the camino

HI Everybody,
I am a nurse and I am getting concerned about some folks writing in

citing particular health conditions or using this or that medication.
I just
want to say that some of these questions might not be posed if their
physicians
were being properly consulted. So let me begin by pointing out that
all the
websites I have seen before doing my own camino, that give instructions
on what
to pack, what gear to use, etc., etc., always begin by stating that one
should consult their physician about doing this hike and getting
clearance.
Physicians encourage exercise and physical activity and are not there to
discourage
people but need to be consulted regarding practicalities with specific
health
issues, medications, etc., etc. I will also say that many physicians
have
never heard of the camino, particularly in the United States. Bring
your
strip maps and guidebook along to the doctor's office when you are there
getting
your annual physical or whatever so that they can get an idea as to the
physical stress load and the towns it passes through. Then the
physician will be
better able to give sound advice on its approach. And the prospective
pilgrim
will have the opportunity to get all questions answered.
I have strong feelings that the camino is no place to begin to
experiment on how you are going to do, given this or that situation.
And it would be
needless experimentation to undertake a camino without a visit to a
doctor,
especially if there already a medical issue. Prepping for the camino
begins
with your own physician! I would be doing this several months ahead
(like 4 to
6 months or more) of your anticipated departure because the physician
should
be giving you clearance and suggestions before you undertake practice
hikes.
And once given the thumbs up, practice hikes should be taking place
near/close to HOME where you have your usual resources should you
experience any
difficulties. Also schedule a follow-up visit before you leave. Let
the
physician review how you are doing. They care... they really do, and
it would give
most of them joy to know that you will be off doing this. And if one is
doing
this for spiritual reasons, I think it would be very touching to them to
let
them know that you will offer prayers for them, their work and their
patients.
I hope that you all take this as a positive suggestion. I am not
trying to discourage anyone, but "flags" have been going up lately and I
really
want to point folks back to the proper protocol for undertake a camino.

     Good luck to everyone, Joanie
