Hi Brenda-

Last fall I too flew into Madrid. I took the train to
my starting point on the Camino and then took the
train back to Madrid from Santiago. I did not book my
train tickets more than a day or two in advance
because I wanted to be flexible as I wasn't sure how
far I would be walking each day. The train station in
Madrid was crowded and the lines tended to be long so
I actually used a travel agent in Madrid to make my
reservation. So I would recommended getting your train
ticket online if you have to opportunity. On the other
hand the train station in Santiago is small and I
didn't have to wait long to get my ticket which I
bought it a day (maybe it was two days) before I left
Santiago. So if you want to be flexible with your
departure date getting train tickets in Santiago was
very easy.

buen camino,
Nola
