injuries/medical problems

Daniel,

On the way from Negreira to Cée, I developed a badly swollen ankle - on
the 64th day of walking. I managed to complete the trip to the cape and
take the bus back to SdeC where it was x-rayed and diagnosed as being
merely degenerative arthritis acting up. It comes with the territory,
of course, and was just one more reminder that I am a member of the
D-generation. Earlier I had problems with the other ankle, slight
swelling and what looked like inflammation. This showed up in León
after three 30 km plus days. A doctor in León examined it for free and
prescribed a skin lotion that cleared it up - it was just a rash,
perhaps a heat rash. I couldn't tell because she didn't speak English
and my Spanish is very limited. The hospital in SdeC had an interpreter
available, so I was able to learn the details about the problem I had
there.

The arthritis was a surprise and I doubt that I could have taken proper
cautions to avoid it. There was no early warning. The rash could
probably have been prevented by removing my shoes and socks two or
three times each day of walking. That's a good thing to do anyway in
order to check for potential blisters. Keeping the distance down to 25
km per day would also have been more prudent.

regards,

Bob S.
