I couldn't agree more about your statement regarding the cost, weight and
limited coverage of the IGN 1:25,000 scale maps. They are not required for
the Camino, which is well marked.
They were recommended for areas of the GR system that are less well
maintained. My experience on the GR7, was that the level of trail
maintenance varied from area to area and that on some portions of the trail
it was a daily orienteering course.
The larger scale map, series 903, is sufficient for planning purposes on all
GR trails in France.
