Hi Kat,
You mention the Dolores Mission.
The Mission is probably named after Miguel Hidalgo, the 74-year old priest of
the town of Dolores, who led the Mexicans in their revolt against the
Spaniards by tolling the bells of his church at 11:00 p.m. one night and calling the
parishioners, mostly Indian and "mestizo" farmers and led them, armed only
with machetes and spikes, to follow a banner with the image of the Virgin of
Guadalupe, and faced a well-armed and organized army from Spain on a victorious
eleven-years struggle to win their country's independence.
Father Hidalgo was a "criollo" (son of Spaniards born in Mexico}, a few
months after his inspired revolt he was captured and beheaded, and his head was
exposed for months in a cage hanging from a post to intimidate potential
independence-seekers. Despite the efforts of the Spaniard soldiers, images of the
Virgin of Guadalupe surrounded by roses were constantly found beneath the cage
containing Father Hidalgo's head until it was removed.
The town of Dolores Hidalgo, on the hights of the Mexican extension of the
Sierra Madre is just too beautiful to behold.
Regards,
Rosina
