Hello;
I am a 58 year old from Calgary Alberta Canada. Margaret, my partner, and I walked the Camino Frances in 2001. We started as mainly walkers and ended up pilgrims.
I am planning a solo walk from Porto to Santiago via the coastal route in late September/early October. I have not been successful in obtaining recent detailed maps or gudes for this route. I have contacted the portuguese tourist board, the Friends of the Caminho in Porto and have ordered the CSJ guide for Portugal but it's latest revision is year 2000.
Specifically I would appreciate the following:
1. a recommendation regarding appropriate sources for recent guides and maps for the Portuguese Route. We were impressed by the yellow books available on the CF (mostly toted by Germans). However, I need one in English for Portugal.
2. Can I obtain a credential in Porto? If not where?
3. Is the route well-marked in Portugal? Once at Tui I can see the Galician portion is well marked.
4. Recommendations regarding inexpensive accommodation in Porto either downtown or near the route
5. Are there refugios along the route in Portugal? Recommendations regarding inexpensive alternate accommodation along the route will be appreciated.
6. Recommendations regarding must sees along the route and also recommendations on what to avoid
7. Any large changes from 2001 in Santiago proper? By October will the flood of pilgrims for the jubilee year lessen?
8. Finally what kind of weather can I expect?
Thank you in advance for any and all information you can provide.
Dennis Switzer.
