Anne, I hope some one has answered this off-line as your departure date is
getting closer.

Yes, credentials can be purchased from the office in rue de la Citadel in
St JPP, get it before you try to book into the refuge (there's a map in the
railway station).

They will also give you a map of the route to Roncesvalles and some advice.
Take lots of water. If daunted by the Route Napolean (semi cross country)
take the alternative highway route through Argueny (spl?).

There are lots of restaurants along the Camino, pilgrim menus are three
courses plus bread and drink (wine, beer or water) at about 7 Euros (almost
the same as the US dollar).

Some rufugios are sited where there are no shops or restaurants and don't
even have open kitchens - be careful at San Juan de Ortega (small bar) and
Ribadiso del Baixo (almost at Santiago) especially - buy picnic food the
town before.

I've no views on cameras except to say that, unless you are good or lucky,
NOTHING (sadly) will compare with the real thing!!

Buen viaje Perigrina!

Jeffrey
