Why don't pilgrims drink enough?

I've just returned from a couple of weeks as Hospitalero in Rabanal del
Camino (the village where the young Spanish girl sadly died of meningitis).

After treating numerous victims of dehydration/stomach bugs I'd ask you all
to consider how much fluid you think you should comsume each day?

Just sitting around, breathing, talking, "normal bodily functions" will
cause you to use some 1 1/2 - 2 liters of water a day in a temperate
climate.

In the heat of a Spanish summer drinking perhaps 4 or even 5 liters of
water each day would not be too much.

A French pilgrim collapsed in the washroom and, having been revived,
admitted to have drunk just half a liter of water and three coffees during
the whole day - it had been 38 degrees (that's 100 degrees F)!!

Another proudly boasted he didn't drink water, just ate fruit!

If you get put off by the thought of so much water try 3/4 liter water, 1/4
liter fruit juice (carton stuff is fine) 1 small spoon of salt.

Hope this helps

Jeffrey
