A day or two after leaving Pamplona, I heard a shawm. It is a double reed
instrument, an ancestor of the oboe, and combines its haunting quality with
a capacity to be heard over long distances. A shawm played at the opening of
the Barcelona Olympics.
Then in Galicia at Samos I was privileged to hear the local high school band
of bagpipes and drums play outside the Ayuntamiento or local government
building.
A sound file of the latter is on my website, page 5 of the Journeys section.
