OK..so where to start?

It's not like you're warming up for a race and need a running start at the
hill...

If you have plenty of time then by all means start as many days back from
SJPP as you want. I didn't walk that part, but those who did said they
enjoyed it very much (and the French cuisine too).

If you are concerned about your physical shape, then take the time to
prepare before you get there. three days of walking and developing blisters
in new boots will make the SJPP to Roncervalles crossing all the more
painful, and unlike the next several days where there are options to shorten
your walk, the SJPP to Roncervalles day is an all or nothing crossing except
for Unnto (very nice - 5km after leaving SJPP). You are not going to get
'in shape' by walking three consecutive days before going over a mountain.

Here's a couple suggestions that won't take up any of your pre-trip time,
will get you ready to carry your pack, and it might be a good conversation
piece:
Walk to the grocery store and carry your purchases home in your backpack
(save some gas too).
Treat yourself to your weekend cup of coffee at your favourite cafe by
walking there with a loaded pack.
Go to the zoo and wear your pack while strolling. It'll keep your mind off
your pack, but you'll know where the sore spots will be at the end of the
day!

as an aside, I found the most technically difficult portion of the first 10
days to be the very short and steep descent into Zubiri, the day following
the SJPP to Roncervalles crossing. So save some energy for the rest of your
walk and take the time to enjoy yourself.

I'll gladly receive any thoughts or comments on or off list.
