Susan:

For what it may be worth, I had no problem bringing back my 52 inch wood
staff on Continental Airlines. It was required to be checked in along with
my backpack as luggage. However, the helpful ticket agent in Madrid did warn
me there were no assurances it would arrive safely and I initialed a
document to that effect. This all happened pre-September 11th so you might
consider calling your carrier in advance to get some sense where things
stand now.
