Reading the history of pilgrimages to Santiago illustrates that many
pilgrimages were made according to the wealth, stature and conviction of the
pilgrim. There are many
accounts of the wealthy travelling in caravans of servants, with soldiers for
protection
and others of the same stature travelling in the simplest fashion without all
the trappings of wealth. Also there are stories of people being paid to make
the pilgrimage in the name of the benefactor.

I feel it is a very private judgement and after facing the interview at the
Pilgrims Office in Santiago I am convinced one that can ably be left to them
and the conscience of the individual seeking the recognition granted by the
presentation of the credential.

A little time ago I read of the surprise of a pilgrim on the Finisterre
Pilgrimage of being granted a certificate. He had openly said that he had
walked all but 12k of the route, his honesty and determination indicated to
me that it was a fair and compassionate decision.

As I travelled the Camino by car I met nothing but love, joy, compassion and
the prayers from both the priests and fellow pilgrims. If any on the camino
during Sep 9 to Sep 21 were waved and hooted at by two males in a small grey
car, my guide Acacio and I were responsible. I hope you gained encouragement
and as much pleasure from the simple act as we did. We were also able to use
the car to the benefit of injured pilgrims. It was a very special and emotive
experience meeting all but one in Santiago and being told if it had not been
for the help given they would have returned home. Instead they had the
opportunity to regain their strength and carry on walking.
