I was hoping to carry on my pack (only 20 lbs.)--no way on any airline; they
would not even discuss it. I used big plastic travel bags that were
available in the airports to protect the straps.

why dont you take the pacjk in the plan as crry on luggage.
I did this twice, once with a 45 pound pack, and it fitted
in the overhead lockers on the plane. also no wait for luggage
