Hello Rev. Hanley, welcome once again to the list!

You can send the bag to yourself at Poste Restante,
Santiago de Compostela, Espana - and don't forget the
"de Compostela." I heard of one pilgrim whose stuff
ended up in Santiago, Chile by this method! ;-)

As for the second question, about $30 per day is
sufficient for your basic needs. As you heard from
others, you'll spend an average of $5-$6 per night in
the refugio. One major meal per day in a restaurant
will run you from $6 to $10, depending on whatyou
order, of course. Many restaurants in the Camino towns
have what they call "menu de peregrino," which last
summer was about 1,000 pesetas or about $7-8 at that
exchange rate. And, $2-$3 should be enough for each
meal you buy at local groceries and make yourself,
again depending on how much you buy. Always take some
fruit on the road. It's cheap and gives you energy.

I paid 5,600 ptas. for a one-way ticket from Madrid to
Pamplona, and about the same from Santiago to Madrid.
I also stayed in quite a few hostales. These should
run you anywhere from 1,500 to 8,000 ptas. The average
for me was 2,000 to 2,500, and I always stayed alone.

One thing you should know: that lovely Seminario Menor
you mentioned that offered beds for about 100 pilgrims
in Santiago - and gave us 3 nights to stay there - has
now closed its refugio. I'm brokenhearted over that,
because from its steps it offered one of the best
views of the city - and the spires of the Cathedral -
that you can get in present-day Santiago. You will no
longer get that view from Monte do Gozo because of the
development. Whenever I think of the joy of looking
down at Santiago - and those spires - from above, that
is where I am in my mind. I will miss it.

UN abrazo,
Ana
