Jim, I forget when we first met – it was likely in 2001 or thereabouts.

Your contributions to IEEE 754 and, of course, CFP have been both extraordinary and exemplary. Both academia and industry have benefitted to an extent that they largely do not recognise.

Thank you for all you have done and for all your wise guidance, recommendations, and diligent stewardship of CFP for these many years!

Mike

Subject: [cfp-interest 3877] CFP changes

This is an announcement that I am retiring from CFP. I’ve chaired the CFP monthly meetings since our first one in September 2009.

I am deeply grateful to have had this opportunity to pursue the goals of CFP, and I have enjoyed amiable, productive collaboration with many CFP, WG14, and IEEE 754 members. Most notable, we completed and published a full C binding for the current ISO/IEC 60559 floating-point standard. And now, for reasons of age and other interests and responsibilities, it is time for me to move on.

Starting immediately, Rajan Bhakta will be taking over as CFP chairman. Rajan has been CFP’s outstandingly effective interface with WG14 for years now, and he’s abundantly qualified for chairing the group. Rajan has been a valued and dear colleague of mine. I know CFP will be very fortunate to have him as chair.

With gratitude and best wishes,

Jim Thomas
