I can think of a couple of points in favor of free stuff.  First, it
makes sense to be well established with the free stuff before starting
to sell things.  Further, as is the major point with open source, if
you put something out, then people will have chances to use it and to
improve it, starting sooner.  Whether either of these gets you more
money is open to question, but neither seems likely to reduce your
monetary reward, and other goals may benefit from the faster action.
