[Gocamino] ATM cards with chips

I have heard that many European ATM machines will only accept cards with computer chips.  Is this true?  Most American cards do not yet have chips and probably will not for a few years.  This could be problematic for pilgrims and other travellers.  I am surprized that I have not heard more about this.  I would have had a difficult time on the Camino without being able to use an ATM machine. Glenn
