A bit of disambiguation may be in order. The card in question is generically called a Smart Card. It looks like a typical Credit Card with the addition of some gold contacts. The contacts resemble the SIM card in your GSM phone, which itself is a simple form of a Smart Card. An RFID chip may also be integrated into a Smart Card, and yes there is RFID in your passport, and yes, there can be security issues depending on the architecture. Read: some RFID devices are secure and some are not. There are shielded passport and credit card wallets available if you feel vulnerable. Wrapping them in aluminum foil accomplishes the same thing, just not quite as convenient.
