When my walking stick is not allowed in the passenger's cabin (most of the time), I just give it to the attendants and they return it to me at the end of the trip. At least, these have been my experiences with Iberia.
I've never traveled to Spain in any other airline; the principal reason for this exclusivity is that going from the USA to Pamplona, Sevilla, etc., one must transfer in Madrid, but the luggage is taken directly from New York to the ultimate destination.... which is a huge relief.
True, often the luggage does not arrive at the same time..... particularly when joining the multitudes that go to Seville for Holy Week, but they always bring it to the hotel within a day or so. At least. that's what has happened to me and my companions every other year or so over the last quarter century.
Hugs!

ola - more from the pilgrims who got the response from Stansted airport:
A PS to Johnnie's email. As the original enquirer--I was worried that the
tansted airport security camera people would consider the poles to be Dangerous
eapons. My dismantled poles fit inside my backpack within Ryanair's
estrictions on dimensions and weight. Poles longer than the
abin-size-restrictions, or bordones/staffs, will almost certainly continue to
et a negative response from our oh-so-strict one-bag airlines. I have seen
elescopic poles protruding from cabin-going backpacks on direct flights from
ublin to Santiago--marking a welcome concession from Aer Lingus!"
