[Gocamino] [Santiagobis] Re: bed bugs at Rubiaes

Re permethrin: it is a synthetic pyrethroid, but unlike DEET it kills insects;
it doesn't just repel them.  In looking at various state health department
guidelines for its use, I learned that the reason not to spray on skin is that
human skin breaks down the permethrin quickly, making it ineffective.  The
chemical was apparently developed in the 70s especially to be used on
cloth--tents, nets, sleeping bags, clothing, etc.  I guess to use or not to use
is a personal decision, but here in upstate NY, faced with West Nile virus in
mosquitos and the nasty bacteria in deer ticks (Lyme disease, babiosis, etc),
I'm glad I have a choice.  Fortunately, the little chinches do not carry disease
but let me tell you, they are all over the place--not in my house yet, but given
the amount of traveling I do, it's only a matter of time.

Have any peregrinos had experience with treated sleeping bags or sleeping bag
liners?

Permethrin is also available here in the US in 99 cent stores.

http://www.elcaminosantiago.com/Images/Permethrin.jpg

Note the four bottles in the photo, all contain the same stuff, but the Sawyer
bottle on the left is noticeably more expensive (like 10x). The three bottles on
the right have different labels but identical contents.

Treat your own stuff: Take a gallon zip-lock bag, empty the contents a bottle,
then one by one soak your clothing for about 5 minutes each. Wring ‘em out and
put on a plastic coat hanger to dry. You should be able to treat a silk sleep
sack the same way in hopes of avoiding their nocturnal visits. I have read that
Permethrin is a poor repellant for chinches, but it’s probably going to do you
no harm.

If you want to try DEET, test it on your skin at home before making you way to
the Road. Some people are allergic, and it tends to discolor clothing and
sleeping bags. Keep out of eyes.

Hospitaleros/as: Diatomaceous Earth (think 'White Cliffs of Dover') is a fine
non-toxic way to treat any premises, the chalk punctures the critter’s
exoskeletons and they simply dehydrate. Use a squeeze bottle to blow it into the
cracks and crevices they live in during the day.
