Hello you all,
It appears that the Portico de Gloria restoration work will be discontinued for now, and that after the Pope's visit engineering experts and antiquarians will study the best way to preserve and protect Maestro Mateo's masterpiece and will hold contests to choose the best plans to bring about a a more permanent rehabilitation and protection of the entire work.
Parts of the scaffolding will be taken down so that sections of the Portico may be viewed commencing on July 15th.
The Portico has been out of bonds since June 2008, when signs of its deterioration became so noticeable as to cause alarm. Actually, the scaffolding provided a precious opportunity to admire the work close up. On application, many of us ascended the 10 meters of the scaffolding, in groups of 10, accompanied by a guide that provided wondrous explanations of some of the details of the work which, inevitably, cannot be seen from the ground. To go up one had to wear tennis shoes and a miner's hat provided by the Cathedral people and hold on tightly to the railing; concomitant with the ascent up the scaffolding there was subsequent a tour of part of some ancient crypts beneath the Cathedral that had not been open to the public before.
It was utterly fascinating, although it appeared (to me, at least) that the scaffolding was a little wobbly. The people working on the restoration were using city bitty little brushes, like those used to put mascara on, and it seemed to me that it would take them forever and a day to cover the whole Portico..
One of the salient points of going up the scaffolding was the realization that the figures (faces, hands, instruments, etc.) are much larger than they appear to be when seen from below, and, also, that the fine details are truly exquisite. Perhaps later on the Cathedral people will come up with an elevating gitzmo, such as the Vatican uses from time to time, that may make it possible to go up and view the Portico figures up close. It is a darn pity that so much cannot be perceived from below.

The Camino powers that be have stated that the churches throughout the Camino Frances will be open every day, with attendants to assist those pilgrims and visitors that may have questions and the like, and to provide seals. But, the statement adds, since the attendants must have one day off, there will be none on duty on Mondays. Nevertheless, the churches will have a small table to the right of the entrance with the appropriate seal and an ink-pad so that pilgrims may help themselves to a seal when the attendants are not there.
Lastly, "El Correo" today reports that thirty "intellectually challenged" young people from Salamanca have arrived in Santiago, after walking the last 100 kms required to obtain a Compostela, with the purpose of praying at the feet of the Apostle for Spain's victory in tomorrow's do-or-die World Cup game.
Whatever the outcome of the game, the enthusiasm of these thirty youngsters has already earned them quite a trophy.
Hugs!
Rosina

El Correo also reported that:

The ' jewel 'of the Portico del Gloria will be from Monday 12
Holy Year and the jewel of the Cathedral, the Portico de la Gloria was half
hidden behind large metal structures . This situation, which began in mid-
2008 and attracted strong criticism, will be resolved next Monday. From the
12th, the pinnacle of Maestro Mateo will be more visible from the floor of
the Basilica with the partial removal of the scaffolding after completion of
one phase of previous studies of conservation and restoration project .
The decision to reduce the scaffolding that covered the porch was taken
jointly by Barrie , the Archbishop and the City Council last March, with the
goal of " balance "the interests of restoration of the monument with his
display during this Holy Year , and in particular towards the visit of Pope
Benedict XVI, on 6 November.
The work , lasting about three days, will take place at night so as not to
interfere in the activities of the Cathedral. Moreover, these will be
"reversible ", since that will allow the reinstatement of removed parts to
the needs of technical staff in the coming months.
For its part, guided tours of the Portico also completed on Saturday , day
10 , following the work of lightening the scaffold. This program , operated
since March of 2009 by Barrie Foundation , has had 20,000 participants , who
have enjoyed the monument from the top of the scaffold.
Also, to give continuity to one of the goals of Agenda Cathedral, the "
awareness " of society on the importance of preserving cultural assets, will
reopen in late July the Crypt to provide a free educational program that
will visit the Gate through 3D .
It is expected that the Plan of Conservation and Preventive Intervention
Proposal are written in six months .
