Modern-day Baghdad has a neighborhood named al-Andalus; it's halfway between the international airport and the Saddam Grand Mosque, and doen't show on many Western maps. You will also find an al-Andalus district in al-Basrah, Iraq and an al-Andalus in metro Kuwait City. The era of the Moorish domination of Iberia is kept alive through education as well as the naming of edifices and squares .. something akin to the naming of Trafalgar Square in the UK. They don't forget, neither should we.

There's a lot of talk about the mosques which were repurposed as churches after the Reconquista. Those of you who have been though Toledo have invariably seen the Catedral, one of the largest in Europe. It began it's career as a Christian church, was converted to a mosque, then back into a church again. Doesn't seem to suffer from any identity crisis, however. An amazingly large Catedral for such a compact town.

Buen Camino,
