[Gocamino] [saintjames] Clarity on Credentials

Hello Pat,
Over the past two years a new type of 'peregrino' has been described - the
'touro-grino' who are given printed credentials compiled by individuals or
tour companies. They mostly travel in buses or with vehicle back-up but
stay in the albergues. There have been reports of tour buses dropping
tourogrinos off a kilometer or so before a village so that they can walk
into the village and claim a bed in the albergue. They are then picked up
again a kilometer or so on the other side the following day.
This is the one problem.
The second problem, which we saw all along the way last year, are bus loads
of pilgrims carrying the official credential, having them stamped at cafe
bars, museums, even stopping at albergues, opening the doors and stamping
their credentials which they present at the pilgrim's office for a
Compostela.
The Pilgrim's Office made a decision that only the official Spanish
credential, issued by the Church, will be accepted. Confraternities around
the world (led by the French Association St Jacques - the first St James
confraternity to be formed in the 1940s) objected. The Pilgrims Office has
now clarified the matter. Their decision was aimed at organisations within
Spain - not at the Confraternities outside of Spain that may continue to
issue credentials for use in the albergues and for the purpose of obataining
a credential.
Abrazos,
