My translation is slightly different and serves to
remind us all of just how difficult it is to
translate from one language into another.
Dust, Clay, sun and Rain
Is the way of St James
Thousands of pilgrims
And more than a thousand years
Pilgrim, who calls you?
What dark force attracts you?
Neither the field of stars
Neither the grand cathedrals
It is not the brave Nararra
Neither the wine of Rioja
Neither the Gallegan seafood
Neither the Plains of Castilla
Pilgrim, who calls you?
What dark force attracts you?
Neither tthe people of the Camino
Neither the rural customs
It is not the history and the culture
Neither the rooster of the Calzada
Neither the palace of Gaudi
neither the castle of Ponferrado
I see it all as I p[ass
It is a pleasure to see it all
More than the voice that calls me
I feel it much deeper
The force that pushes me
The force that attracts me
I cannot explain it, even I
Only He above knows
The above was copied from my journal as I translated
it from my bunk that morning before I left, as i was
looking directly at the poem/prayer. Juan, the
Hospitalero there (Merida), was one of the best of the
hospitaleros i have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
He went far out of his way to be accommodating to the
pilgrims under his care. Frankly, I believe he
deserves a few accolades for his caring. He helped me
and I APPRECIATE IT TREMENDOUSLY
