 Hello you all,

There is a new pilgrims magazine, called “Camino de Santiago; revista peregrina (Way of Saint James, pilgrims’ magazine) and it is gorgeous.  It seems to be fashioned after the “Geo” magazine which, as everyone knows, is plush and beautiful (and which carried a very nice article about the Camino some months ago).

The “director” of the magazine is Carmen Pugliese, and it has a foreword written by Paolo Caucci von Saucken, the president of the International committee of Caminode Santiago Experts (if you please), a foreword from Angel Luis Barrera, president of the Spanish Federation of Associations of friends of the Camino de Santiago and a foreword from Cesar Antonio Molina, Spain’s Minister of Culture, no less.

The magazine is printed in glossy, thickish paper and it is lavishly and beautifully illustrated with drawings and fabulous photographs.

The first edition contains, among others, wonderful articles about the Santiago and Camino paintings in the Prado Museum, about who is who in the portico de Gloria, about St. Jean pied de port, and about personal reflections of sundry pilgrims.

The whole thing is impressively put together; among its many exquisite details is the yellow arrow at the bottom of each page.

There is also an article about the pilgrims credential and the new requirements therefor, to go into effect next January 1st. written by Don Genaro Cebrian who is a Cathedral of Santiago Canonic and who heads the pilgrims’
office in Santiago (I will translate and post the article later).

I was happy to read that dear “Mundicamino” (whose electronic publications I have enjoyed for years) is listed as a distributor of the new magazine, together with SGEL (?).

The magazine sells in newsstands in Spain for 4.50 euros ($7 US Dlls.) and it may be subscribed to.  It is published bi-monthly and the subscription costs 24 Euros in Spain, 39 Euros in the European Union and 46 ($75 US Dlls.)  Euros elsewhere, including the USA which includes postage.

Given the quality of the printing, and the contents, I think it is much worth the cost.  One would pay a great deal more for a comparable artsy book, without the benefit of insiders, so-to-speak, viewpoints.

I particularly enjoyed the article on the portico de Gloria which is being restored and which, it has been conceded, will not be finished by the next Holy year, 2010.  At present it is surrounded, and covered, by work platforms, etc, and cannot really be seen. The nice thing about it is that one can climb up the wooden structures (if one dares) at given times and see the upper figures and their details fairly close.

The magazine is really, really, lovely.

Hugs!

Rosina
