Wendy and all,
Sometime ago, someone made me aware of the YOUTUBE videos of this group. Go
to YOUTUBE and search for the video "Chove en Santiago". There are concert
videos of Luar na Lubre playing this and other songs, but the great one is
the beautifully haunting music video of them on the beaches of Galicia and
in Santiago. When you watch the video, you will see the name "Lorca" in the
sand. Besides wanting to learn Spanish after returning from my first
Camino, I have acquired an obsession about all things Spanish. Yesterday my
wife brought me a book of the selected poems of Fredrico Lorca and in it was
the poem that the song was based on, "Chove en Santiago". The words follow
in Gallego and English....
Chove en Santiago
meu doce amor.
Camelia branca do ar
brila entebrecida o sol.
Chove en Santiago
no noite escura.
Herbas de prata e de sono
cobren a valeira.
Olla a choiva pol-a rua,
laio de pedra e cristal.
Olla no vento esvaido
soma e cinza do teu mar.
Soma e cinza do teu mar
Santiago, lonxe do sol.
Agoa da manan anterga
trema no meu corazone.
Translated...............
It rains in Santiago,
my seet love.
White camellia of the air,
shadowy shines the sun
It rains in Santiago
in the dark night.
Grasses of silver and of sleep
cover the empty moon.
See the rain in the street,
lament of stone and crystal.
See in the vanishing wind
shadow and ash of your sea.
Shadow and ash of your sea,
Santiago, far from the sun.
Water of ancient morning
trembles in my heart.
