"They had camped well away from the pilgrim road in a small copse on  the 
edge of rolling country. Ever since the route from the Somport  Pass north of 
Jaca had joined with the other northern routes that crossed  the Pyrenees at 
Roncesvalles north of Pamplona, the human throngs had more  than tripled. Finding 
the road and campsites fouled with human an animal  droppings, in disgust, 
Rainald had taken to locating their overnight camps  well north of the 
thoroughfare. It meant a minor loss of time at the  beginning and end of the day, but 
that was more tolerable than the  trailside filth." ("Journey to Compostela-A
