La Voz de Galicia, reported yesterday that almost 41000 compostelas were
given out in the first 6 months of this year. This is up about 8000 from
last year. This number does not include those pilgrims consider that walk
only sections of the camino and those that do not get the compostela.

A total of 40,868 pilgrims received the Compostela in first half of the
year, 8,000 more than the 32,134 pilgrims from last year.  Germany had the
largest number of foreign pilgrims with 6,952 - followed by France with
3,226, and Italy with 2,715.  Smaller numbers were Dutch and Belgians.
There were 16,260 from Spain, the majority coming from Madrid, Catalonia,
Valencia and Andalusia.  The French Way continues to have the largest number
of pilgrims followed by the Portuguese Way, Camino del Norte, Via de la
Plata and the Primitive Way. June has had the largest numbers of pilgrims
arriving at Santiago.  The majority arrived on foot, whereas a minority
