Grant, many thanks for that information. I assumed the bus could not
take very long.
Yes, I was planning to fly to Bilbao, bus to Pamplona, then on to
R'valles . . . however, I will certainly investigate the option of
flying to Pamplona and perhaps sharing a taxi (and having a look around
Pamplona). It would be a nice way to ease into the camino and meet some
fellow pilgrims.
(It would also be a good early test of my Spanish which, while very far
from fluent, rises to the occasion when it has to. It's amazing how the
words come back when you realise that the alternative to arranging a
room is to spend the night on a park bench).

I will also explore the Pau alternative, as I have British friends who
live near Pau. They have already offered to drive me to SJPDP, so I
imagine that a couple of bottles of good wine could easily bribe them to
carry on to R'valles!
