I had a similar situation as Dennis...

I was returning to the US from Amsterdam. When putting my carry-on through
the scanner they detected a couple of dagger-like items. Yup, Cruzes de
Santiago, letter openers in sterling silver purchased as gifts. I had placed
all silver and gold 'Santi' items inside my carry-on to lower the potential
of pilferage. I debated the lethality of the crosses, demonstrating how they
would not puncture skin. I'm a Christian pilgrim, a minor oversight,
sterling silver, yada yada. Alas to no avail, my words did not sway their
pronouncement. They DID however retrieve my roll-on from the cargo hold, and
put the sinister objects inside for me. I never left the secure area. Gotta
love the Dutch. The letter openers made it home, thence onward to the
recipents. I now check my carry-on thrice, and walk through check-in once.

Buen Camino,

Grant
