[Gocamino] Lodgings towards the end of the French Way

Dear All--One more observation about accomodations. When walking last September, the only full refugio we found was in Estella; I was in pain from tendonitis and upset that we had no bed. The hospitalero was less than helpful; he seemed to speak neither Spanish, French or English, and the other pilgrims were sympathetic but off to their showers, lunch, sightseeing. I sat on the bench in front of the refugio while my husband (who walked with me the first week) went in search of a hotel recommended by the Confraternity guide. He found it, it was wonderful (Let's Go rates it #1 in Estella) and we ended up staying 2 days and 2 nights, for the medieval Spanish music festival and to enjoy the life of that lovely little city. And, to treat my tendonitis, which I did. It was a fortuitous stop.

Lynn, you hit the nail on the head, and kindly too. I was trying to find a way to say that without being offensive to people who haven't yet made the trip. So much of the camino is learning all the lessons about sensitive skin and walking too fast to ensure there's a place to sleep, and the price you pay for the security of reservations made in advance. Eventually you just walk, take your chances, and trust.

I have killer asthma that's triggered by allergies. One of the best nights' sleep I ever got on the camino was in a haystack in Galicia...and I am SO allergic to hay, cows, barns, grass, etc. etc. It's different over there, at least it was for me.
