Katy,

You will have one important advantage by starting at
Somport: It's uncrowded, serene, absolutely beautiful
with the mountains surrounding you, and with albergues
with plenty of room. You won't wait in long lines or
fight for space at the end of the long day's walk --
until you get to Puente La Reina, that is. Thereafter,
you'll meet the crowds.

By the way, to minimize confusion for new pilgrims,
the Puente La Reina you'll meet the Camino Frances at
is in Navarra; there's a smaller one you'll pass
before that, on the Aragones, called Puente la Reina
de Jaca.

There are, however, advantages to starting at
Roncesvalles or St. Jean (or a bit before, in France).
Navarra is pretty special and you'll see very little
of it by taking the Aragones. There's nothing like the
formal blessing you receive at the Colegiata in
Roncesvalles. You won't get that anywhere else, at
least until you arrive in Santiago.

The decision is yours -- and a nice decision, say I.

Buen Camino,
Ana
