In addition to the Iberia flights to London, which to obtain a pilgrim
discount you can't reserve ahead and for which your son will need to
take his compostela to the Iberia Office in Santiago to obtain any
discount, there are almost certain to be Ryanair flights starting in
April.

These go from Santiago to either Stansted (most likely) or Luton both of
which call themselves London. There is a coach link between these
airports and Heathrow. Ryanair flights are extremely good value if
purchased well in advance but their customer service and attitude to
complaints is lousy. If he does take the Ryanair alternative he should
allow plenty of time, maybe an overnight stop in London as they will not
be responsible for missed connections.

The path into Santiago passes the airport and he may be able to check
availability for the next few days on his way into town.

Quite often an Iberia flight into Bilbao and out of Santiago booked
ahead work out as good value (you can even check out flying into
Pamplona) when other costs associated with the alternatives have been
taken into account. This requires a fixed return date which is not
always possible though if he has booked a return long distance flight to
London this will probably have a fixed return date.

Regards

William
