I've used my debit card all over the world without informing my bank and
never had any trouble. Years ago I was on my way to Europe and phoned
AMEX to tell them I would be using it out of the country and the reply
was somewhat on the order of 'that's nice'.

In addition to Grant's advice, make sure you inform your bank that you
will be using your card overseas. If you don't some banks will
deactivate the card once it is used outside the country as a measure
against identity theft& fraud, and if this happens the only solution is
to get a new card from your bank (virtually impossible to do while ont
he camino by its nature of time constraints and traveling)

Hello all,
I have a Visa card from my bank that can be used as either a debit or
credit
card at stores or ATMs in this country. Can I use it as a debit card in
Spain and have the money taken from my checking account or does it have
to
be used as a credit card? The reason, of course, is not only do you
avoid
interest charges, but also (at least with my credit cards) higher
transaction costs.
Thanks in advance for any advice... Glenn

Yes, your Visa debit card can be used in Spain as described. My bank has
an
ATM/Visa Debit card I carry on the Camino. Works just dandy. Be certain
to
have a 4 digit, not 6 digit PIN for the card. Set up Internet banking
and
account access before you go, then you can move money around and pay any
cards whilst on the Road. I stay over the pond for two to four months at
a
stretch. The only way I can is by paying cards as they come due, never
paying interest. I recommend American Express Travelers Checks as a
backup,
and a second credit card in case your Visa dies. Mine did, and I was
happy
to have an alternative. The magnetic strip went soft, and there was no
more
ATM money for the kid. Bring half as much stuff and twice as much money
as
you think you'll need. Then just dive in, and the Road will rise up to
meet
you.
Have a great journey.
