Dennis,

A "good" boot is one which works for you. Cristina has a strong point: light
weight is one of my prime factors when considering footwear. A heavy
mountaineering boot is good for winter mountain work, but will kill your
feet on a summer Camino. Ankle support is often over-emphasized. It is only
really a factor if you have a demonstrable medical need, or carry a huge
load. The latter is completely under your control. Carry no more than 7 K
(15 pounds), and you fix a number of ills.

My ideal footwear is a sandal, the Teva 'Stratum':

The sock of choice is the Thorlo 'TKX - Backpacker':

Finally, ponder starting in Leon instead of escaping the Meseta via RENFE,
it makes for better continuity. You can get your credenciales in Madrid at
the Catedral de la Almudena, and be ready to rock upon arrival in Leon. Two
to three weeks from Leon to Santiago is plenty, but save some time for
Santiago, it must be savored.

Have a great journey,

Grant
