Poem outside Nájera
As translated by Grant Spangler

Dirt, dust, sun, and rain
is the Camino of Santiago.
Thousands of pilgrims
and more for a thousand years.

Pilgrim, Who are you?
What hidden force attracts you?
Not the Milky Way
or the great cathedrals.

It’s not the beauty of Navarra,
or the wine of the Riojans,
or the seafood of the Galatians,
or the plains of the Castilians.

Pilgrim, Who calls you?
What hidden force attracts you?
Not the people of the Camino,
or their rural customs.

It’s not the history or the culture,
or the rooster of Calzada,
or the palace of Gaudi,
or the castle of Ponferrada.

Everything which I see is passing,
and it’s all a great joy.
Stronger the voice which calls me,
It is calling ever deeper.

The force which pushes me on,
the force that attracts me.
I cannot explain,
Only He from above knows!
