Digital Cameras

Am planning on biking the Camino Frances in June.

Interested in comments or suggestions around taking a digital camera.
Specifically:

- Has anyone carried a SLR digital camera by bike?  Any problems with damage to the camera
or lenses?

- Has anyone used local photo shops or internet cafes along the journey to transfer pictures
from the camera or compact flash card to CD?
