Women on the Road -- Long ago

Diana Webb, Pilgrims and Pilgrimage, 2001 has several mentions of women as
pilgrims, starting with the propriety of pilgrimage for women.  The earliest
woman mentioned was sa Roman pilgrimage, around 720.  There is an
interesting account of a wife of a knight, who because of her age and number
of children, was commanded by her bishop to do good works and assign funds
for the repair of her church equal to the sum she would have spent going to
Santiago.(in the 1300's)

I imagine there's a bit more...and I too hope the person(s) who asked have
found what they were looking for
