Hello you all,
Last year 176 pilgrims received the Compostela in February; during 1999, the last Xacobean Holy Year, 642 pilgrims did so; last month 1,420 pilgrims were awarded the Compostela in Santiago.
Most of the pilgrims were from Spain, but 264 were from other countries: 59 from Portugal; 34 from the Nordic countries (?); 31 from Germany; 21 from France; 14 from Brasil; 14 from the United States, folowed, in decreasing numbers, by pilgrims from Canada, Chile, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and others countries totaling 34 in all.
1,344 of the pilgrims walked, 73 rode bicycles and 3 rode horses.
51 of the pilgrims were over 60 years old, 645 were between 30 and 60 years of age and 722 were under 30 years old.
96% of the pilgrims, 1,361, declared a religious motive for the pilgrimage and 4%, 51, an educational/cultural reason.
498 of the pilgrims were women and 722 were men.
1,145 of the pilgrims followed the French Way; 180 the Portuguese Way; 40 the Northern Way; 34 the English Way and 21 the Silver Way (Via de la Plata).
Most of the pilgrims, 511, commenced the pilgrimage in Sarria; 169 in O Cebreiro; 117 in Tuy (!); 84 in Roncesvalles; 62 in Leon; 53 in Ponferrada; 40 in SJPP; and the others came from various sites all more than 100 kilometers distant from Santiago.
Again, please note that the above figures represent only those pilgrims who did receive a Compostela and not, in the least, all the pilgrims who may have been on the various routes of the Camino at any one time.
Warm regards,
Rosina
