I bought a walking stick about a month before my departure. I was a bit skeptical about using one as I don't carry one on hikes. I did my practice hikes with pack and stick, I felt very uncomfortable with it. I returned it.
One of my companions needed a walking stick after Pamplona and bought one for 7 Euros. We met creative artists along The Way, one in particular from France, who claimed he had no money, begged for food and accomodations at night, he would find or buy wood and carve beautiful walking sticks and then sell them to people, one fellow Pilgrim paid 40E! It was beautiful!
The only time I wished I a stick was on the stretch from Rabanal del Camino to Molinesca - the downhill part was particularly gruelling, many Pilgrim's slipping to their knees, including me!! No sooner that I wished I had a stick a fellow Pilgrim outstretched their hand and lent me hers!
Good luck! Buen Camino
